Toska| The Most Disturbing 2D Psychological Horror Game About Mental Health Struggles | Visual Novel
i can’t say i fully grasp everything justt yet as it’s seeped deep in complex metaphors/symbolism my mind could only come up with vague theories and imagines, but i did feel the sinking hollow there, okay i may be a bit overthinking it, or trying to read into it too much, hope you may allow me indulge working out on the meaning. i can see connections between the applied color palette, world, and their bond (it always doesn’t fail to plant a gloomy guilt in me for Makoto, and both of them I’ve gotten very much attached with</3 Eyes Up will be next to play I promise). It was interesting the name Kazimir I found from search revealed it has two possible meanings: “preacher of peace” or alternatively “destroyer of peace” plus the Tosca color symbolism (balance, healing, and the sort that clash with the every stubborn red that stuck and engulfed him whole), I’m also guessing the name Miro was ‘Mirror’, referenced with the associated void.
All combined, it was rich in abstract retro surrealism-vibes soaked by bitter medi—cal+cine taste that burned at open wounds, forming the engrossing atmospheric narrative flow and multi-dimensional characters of a psychological horror this was, it reminded me of the classics (e.g End Roll, Yume Nikki) along with the more recent (Milk inside a bag of milk, Sybil is haunted, and others I have played.) these kinda niche genre brought fresh through the raw cathartic emotive collection reminisced and this one I considered; rose to the same level:D
Aside from the lag-mix-crash I experienced like one of the users below, I did stumble into the unsealed spots of map phased through at areas like the Kitchen, the red hallways but, I’m leaned to think it fitted the topsy-turvy dream-walking’s blurred edges with reality. Others were the scalpel-trigger object being visible and there despite after being picked up, and the disappointment.ogg still missing—I was wondering if it had been fixed since it was just updated two days ago too with maybe newer build and that particular file just up and deleted in a corrupted download. Also, noticed a typo near right the start; will to while I’m still.
Finally, I think the only end I haven’t got yet was the one about confrontation? I loved Miro’s design of the hair tied up like bunny ears, plus the first two chibi doodles of him were cute. meanwhile, the similar-bunny resemblance in lop ears from that creepy manifestation of nightmare managed to unsettled me enough to earn a spot among my ranked nightmare fuels, haha. Anyway, your work has sold me—I’d love to delve further into the recurring world/characters (mourning over the good, idealistic endings they deserved but have yet to gain) or whatever new stories you have in store. <3
Hi!! Thank you for the analysis, this was so cool and exciting to read! You did get quite a few things spot on, and I'm glad it gave the right emotional feelings and discomforts! The names were very intentional, I'm glad you looked them up!
Milk inside a bag of milk + milk outside a bag of milk are one of my all-time favourite games, I'm glad you noticed the inspiration and I'm honoured you believe my little game to be on the same level!!
I thought I had fixed that one missing file, but maybe not ToT and I'm not quite sure what is causing the crash in those areas. Maybe there's hidden events causing it, I'll have to take a look. Hopefully it can be fixed or at least avoided next time I code a game!
I'm happy his design is enjoyable!! And that my monster is actually creepy haha. Overall thank you for this comment!! Reading your analysis made my day and I hope my next games are enjoyable too!!
Good game
AHH!! Thank you so much for playing!! I hope you enjoyed the experience!!
Finally got around to getting through every ending for this game, and omfg YOU SLAYED WITH THIS DUDE!! This was an incredible experience. The atmosphere, the music, the art, the writing?? You worked so hard on this and I'm so incredibly proud of what you were able to accomplish in such little time. While there are areas that could use polish, it runs perfectly fine considering how quickly it was made. I'm so so excited to see more from you, you're definitely going places man :D
ADURHGGG THANK YOUUUUU :> I’m glad it was enjoyable!! I’ve definitely learnt a lot on how to polish certain areas and things and hopefully the next game will be even better
Game is pretty amazing! The art is spectacular and musics are really good! There's some symbolism I guess going on. I might try to check about it later. I guess I do have few issues on the game. Certain areas, lag for unknown reason, and can also crash the game if you still stay on those areas. (The areas are the one with the tv and a patch hole, and the other was the two portraits and a hole, with the dissection part coming next there.) It might be my PC tho unfortunately, but those areas weirdly lag. Still I was able to finish the game I guess despite all of those issues. I have gotten endings 0 to 3, but I have no idea how to get to the 5th ending, I feel like I have tried already every other option. I even didn't get the scalpel at the final of the surgery, but that didn't matter, and still initiated to control mako. But oh well I guess I found the most important ones at least.
Still, pretty good game!
Hi!! Thanks for the comment and the review! I’m not sure why those areas would be causing lag, but I’ll take a look and see if there’s anything unnecessary running the background of those events! I will be looking at my files tonight to try and make a browser friendly version as well, so hopefully looking through those will solve any issues :>
As for ending 4 (technically the fifth ending), here’s a guide on how to get it! If this doesn’t work for you, I’ll try and play through to see if there’s a bug preventing it’s completion.
When asked what you’re looking for, select the option that you’re not looking for anything.
After solving the select titles puzzle, you will be prompted with a yes or no question to “get rid of it”. Select yes.
Play through and complete the game as normal, and it should trigger that last ending for you!
thanks again for the feedback!
Again thanks for the reply. I was so confused about that, because on my first run, I just walked around it hence I didn't know about that. But yeah I also noticed it was updated, and unsure what the update was, but to say about that, it still lagged on those areas. Again might be just my PC at this point. Still pretty amazing game and as well for being a game jam game. Tons of polish (despite of like some areas you can
walk through walls) on this game and for being heavy on story as well.
Again, just really amazing game!
No problem!! I really appreciate feedback and have been updating some things here and there. I've managed to make the files way smaller now, woo!!!! Hopefully my maps and things will be stronger next game, thanks for playing and the video!!
ok I'll do a follow up again. I did test again the newer one. Even tho the game is smaller now, I guess unfortunately for some unknown reason, those 2 specific maps really lag. We could just say it might be my PC. Also found a new bug or missing file during the rainy forest sequence the blind ogg not found appears. Disappointment ogg is missing as well.
Also hopefully and you're welcome!
Thanks for finding those!!! I’ll test again and hopefully have a new build out tomorrow :)
